PPBDesigner: A Population Balance Design Software for Particulate Systems

01.Jan.2020

We present a new commercial software which is essentially based on a population balance modelling framework to model, simulate and design chemical engineering processes exhibiting two-phase flow with a discrete character. The present software which is called PPBDesigner is a member of a simulation suite of software programs and it will be integrated with CHEMCAD, one of the leading flowsheet process simulators. From the user point of view, the PPBDesigner comes with a modern graphical user interface which uses navigational tags, informational components, notifications and message boxes with modern interactive graphics library. The PPBDesigner utilizes advanced population balance solution methods ranging from internally consistent discrete to moment-based solvers. In this work, we present the results of modelling and simulation of a pilot packed bed liquid extraction column (DN80) as implemented in the PPBDesigner. The results include the PPBDesigner learning algorithm where the column hydrodynamics is learnt at the first step. In the prediction step, the column performance is validated where the predicted results are found in good agreement with the experimental data in spite of introducing an uncertainty level of 25 percent in the column hydrodynamics due to droplet coalescence modelling.
